This is sometimes challenging as F8, shift+F8 command from legacy Windows OS is not always responsive on Windows 10. When iMac fails to boot due to graphics driver incompatibility, we need to go to safemode to remove driver, then do a restart.
#Turn mac into windows without bootcamp install#
Note2: This option is only available after upgrading to latest build - 1607ĥ) Hide Nvidia windows updates by downloading this trouble shooter: Ħ) After all the steps above are done, make sure nvidia drivers and software are uninstalled, then restartħ) Repeat 6 couple more times to make sure Nvidia drivers do not install
#Turn mac into windows without bootcamp update#
Note1: This prevents windows update from successfully installing the drivers automatically. In my case, I uninstalled Geforce 9400M driver inside device manager and uninstalled the corresponding drivers from "uninstall program" window as well.ģ) Install Realtek Audio Driver (Download from realtek website)Ĥ) Go to device manager and find the hardeware ID associated with Nvidia graphic card, then open group policy editor, go to Computer Configuration –> Administrative Templates –> System –> Device Installation –> Device Installation Restrictions -> “Prevent installation of devices not described by other policy settings”, add all of the hardware IDs to the group policy. Windows update will likely install incompatible display driver (not sure if its is intentional act from Apple or Nvidia)ġ) Create a Windows 10 Install Disk, put it in the DVD drive, start computer, press Shift+ C or hold onto windows/option key (the latter may not always work)Ģ) Update windows to Windows 10 Build 1607 (latest build), make sure you uninstall all Nvidia drivers from device manager before restarting.
Older iMac does not support installing from USB, must find a legacy computer with DVD burner and create a Windows 10 install diskįor newer Mac, installing Windows 10 in the BIOS or BIOS emulation mode instead of EFI will have much higher chance of working
Windows 10 is unsupported via bootcamp and I don't need bootcamp and MacOS taking up space on the SSD anyways. Windows 10 is a good choice for business use case and instead of buying a new All-in-One machine, I decided to upgrade the iMac with SSD and install Windows on it instead.
Motivation: 24" iMac running macOS with the old hard drive runs way too slow. These instruction will probably likely with other Macs as well. This process took me a while to perfect and get it to work perfectly, so I will share this with others.
